About Us
The Union of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq (UNSM) is a tribal organization established in 1969 to provide a unified political voice for the Mi’kmaq people of Nova Scotia.
Evolving through the guidance of Mi’kmaq values and tradition, UNSM now works collectively with member First Nations to support governance, healthy communities, and self-determined Nationhood.

Our History
For more than 50 years, UNSM has served as an advocate and support organization for Mi’kmaq communities. What began as a collective effort to strengthen political representation has grown into a multifaceted organization offering a wide range of programs, services, and technical expertise. Over time, UNSM has expanded its capacity and scope to better respond to the evolving needs and priorities of Mi’kmaq communities.
