Our WOrk
Mawkim is a Mi’kmaw-led data governance initiative housed within the Union of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq (UNSM), focused on supporting Indigenous data sovereignty across Atlantic First Nations communities. Rooted in Mi’kmaw language, culture, and traditions, Mawkim works to ensure that data about Mi’kmaw people is collected, managed, and used by the communities themselves. Its mission is to establish a regional, community-driven data system that empowers self-determination, preserves cultural knowledge, and informs decision-making. By stewarding data, sharing community stories, and supporting research guided by OCAP® principles (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession), Mawkim helps Mi’kmaw communities understand their needs, strengthen governance, and shape their future.
