UNSM Wills & Estates Management Project 2017-2018

From December 2017 to November 2018, UNSM Capacity Development services hosted a number of Wills and Estates Management information sessions throughout Unama’ki. Mi’kmaw lawyer Tuma Young facilitated information sessions for Wagmatcook, We’koqma’q, Membertou, and Potlotek while Mi’kmaw lawyer Cheryl Knockwood facilitated a session for Eskasoni. The sessions were delivered in both English and Mi’kmaq on the following dates:

  • Wagmatcook – December 8, 2017; October 12, 2018
  • We’koqma’q – December 14, 2017; November 9, 2018
  • Potlotek – February 8, 2018 
  • Eskasoni – May 9, 2018
  • Membertou – May 23, 2018

Community members who attended the information sessions were provided the opportunity to have their wills drafted at no charge by the facilitating Mi’kmaw lawyer.

To increase lawyer’s capacity to complete a will for Mi’kmaw community members, a legal education session was held in Membertou on October 5, 2018. Facilitated by Mi’kmaw lawyer Tuma Young, this session provides lawyers with the specifics of completing a Will and settling an estate for First Nation community members. 

UNSM Wills & Estates Management Project 2018-2019

From February to July 2019, UNSM Capacity Development services hosted Wills and Estates Management information sessions for Acadia First Nation community members. Mi’kmaw lawyer Shelly Martin facilitated the information sessions in the Acadia First Nation communities of Hammonds Plains, Gold River (with community members of Medway invited to attend) and Yarmouth. The sessions were delivered on the following dates:

  • Hammonds Plains – February 2, 2019
  • Gold River/Medway – May 22, 2019
  • Yarmouth – July 8, 2019

Community members who attended the information sessions were provided the opportunity to have their wills drafted at no charge by Mi’kmaw lawyer Shelly Martin.

To increase lawyer’s capacity to complete a will for Mi’kmaw community members, a legal education session will be held in on October 11, 2019 at the Delta hotel in Burnside, Dartmouth. Facilitated by Mi’kmaw lawyer Tuma Young, this session provides lawyers with the specifics of completing a Will and settling an estate for First Nation community members.
